May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Taking the First Step Toward Wellness

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed each May to increase understanding of mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. Tillamook Family Counseling Center proudly supports this annual initiative by encouraging open conversations about mental well-being and helping our community access the resources they need.

This year, Mental Health America’s campaign theme is “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World.” This campaign focuses on how modern life, such as technology, current events, and constant change, can make it hard to prioritize mental health. Many people are asking themselves, “Where do I start?”

Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World

Life today can feel overwhelming. From global issues to personal stressors, people are facing significant mental health challenges—and it can be hard to know how or where to begin improving mental well-being. Mental Health America reminds us that small steps can make a big difference. Here are some practical tips to support your mental health this month:

  • Start by talking about it. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or mental health professional, opening up about your feelings is an important first step.
  • Small actions can lead to big changes. Whether it’s building a routine, practicing mindfulness, or finding new ways to nurture your spirit, these self-help resources can help you feel empowered to take proactive steps toward wellness.
  • Reclaim your space. Organize your environment to reduce stress and boost your mood. Consider creating a dedicated area for rest.
  • Connect with others. Join a Tillamook County Wellness walking group or another community activity to build support and reduce isolation.
  • Limit your exposure to distressing news or social media. Set healthy boundaries with digital content to protect your peace of mind.

As Sarah Ermer, Prevention Specialist at Tillamook Family Counseling Center (TFCC), explains, “You don’t have to have an alcohol use disorder or be binge drinking to experience harm from alcohol. A lot of people think the threshold for harm is being drunk, but that’s not the case.”

Recognizing World Teen Mental Wellness Day in Oregon

March 2 marks World Teen Mental Wellness Day — a reminder that supporting young people’s emotional health is just as important as supporting their physical health.

Here in Oregon, thousands of youth are navigating anxiety, depression, academic pressures, and social challenges. In 2023 alone, more than 31,000 Oregon youth under 18 received Medicaid-funded mental health services, and 55,000 youth ages 12–17 are living with depression (Oregon State Fact Sheet). These numbers remind us that teen mental health challenges are not rare — they are something many families across our state, including here on the Oregon Coast, experience.
